Caterpillar Cake is a joyful collection of poetry that will have a wide appeal.

This collection is filled with poems written to be shared aloud. It has a good range of rhythm and rhyme and with phrases children will enjoy joining in with. The book includes themes such as the seaside, school, pets and home. It has a good combination of humorous poems, such as Hide and Seek, which suggests all the places you could hide, alongside more gentle poems such as River Lullaby, the perfect poem to be read before bedtime or when you wish to quieten down a class.

Caterpillar Cake is vibrantly illustrated and is inviting to look at, as well as read. It’s characters show diversity so any child can see themselves in the pictures and poetry. It would be a welcome staple in the early years and primary year 1 classroom with its lightness and fun. Ideal as a class book, part of a school library, or shared with the home- school reading community. Matt’s first picturebook for young children Shu Lin’s Grandpa is also reviewed.
