Monsieur Roscoe on Holiday, illustrated by award winning artist, Jim Field shares the familiarity and friendliness of Oi Frog!

The endpapers are a delectable checkerboard of what’s to come – promising lots of opportunities for children to learn French. This book invites the reader to learn another language in a friendly way – the illustrations add relatable meaning to acquire a new language with confidence.

At times, I did find the pace of the story a little overwhelming. The text covers many themes and so for a young child, the volume of new words in a different language could be overwhelming.

The story follows Monsieur Roscoe and his goldfish, Fry on an action-packed holiday trip. They camp, ski and sail their way through the journey of a lifetime, making friends and learning lots of new French words along the way. The range of activities presents a range of vocabulary that is explored throughout the book:

Day to day vocabulary

Snowy weather

It can be argued, there are too many themes covered.

When used with children, I would suggest sharing snippets of Monsieur Roscoe’s trip. It could work well alongside other books related to the study of language such as the brilliant title Literally: Amazing Words and where they come from. This text could be used throughout the Primary Phase.
