The Dictionary of Difficult Words is a fun, playful and clever book brimming with perplexing words.

What is a bumbershoot? Or a moonbow? And what does it mean when someone absquatulates…? Find out all this and more in the Dictionary of Difficult Words. This book will engage, inspire and ignite a curiosity about words and the English language.

I adore the opening, and it reminds me of Daniel Pennac and Quentin Blake’s Rights of the Reader posters. The page entitled How to Read this Book is more an exploration of how to engage with the book; not rules. There is an openness and freedom that runs through the book – not once do these very ambitious words come across as intimidating.

You could have a lot of fun just pronouncing the words, as well as trying to get them into everyday language.

A wonderfully whimsical celebration of words.
