We’ve got This!: Six Steps to Build Your Empathy Power is an inspiring handbook created in partnership with Empathy Lab to help build children’s awareness of empathy and how it can be a powerful force for change.

The author’s aim is to inspire readers to make the world a better place using empathy and since reading is one of the best ways to do this then there is no better place to start than with this book.

‘It’s how we build a better, brighter future.’

It is divided into sections which follow a six-step process: know what empathy is, know how empathy works, use your empathy out in the wild, learn to recognise emotions, be a brilliant communicator and become the ultimate empathy hero. The book doesn’t necessarily have to be read from cover to cover as children might like to read certain parts, depending on what information they need. However, if it’s being shared as a learning tool, I think it is important that each chapter is read in order as the information builds from developing an understanding of what empathy is to how to use it to communicate effectively with others.

Children will find the design appealing for there is a balance of text, diagrams, comic strips and summary boxes for facts and key information, with other features such as key vocabulary in bold. The use of yellow makes the book bright and appealing but the grey and neutral colours bring about calm and reassurance. The use of the second person enables the reader to feel involved as if they are being directly spoken to, motivated and empowered.

At the end of each section there are ‘Empathy Boosting Activities,’ giving children practical ways in which they can deepen their understanding of what they have learnt and put it into action, having fun at the same time. An example of this is to make an ‘Empathy Resolution,’ for example one based on listening to others. This will help children to learn about how listening is just as important as talking; how everyone has a story to tell and that much can be learnt from listening to others.

We’ve got This! is such an important book to have in schools because it is a great way to help children understand the importance of ‘Empathy’- as a life skill needed in relationships, at school, in the community and all around the world.’
