When I Grow Up, I Want to Help People: When I Grow Up, I Want To… is a new series of four non-fiction picture books produced by Noodle Juice Ltd., each containing 13 different jobs. Others in the collection focus on looking after the planet, STEM, and the creative industries.

When I Grow Up I Want To Help People devotes a double-page spread to simple descriptions of various careers such as teaching, nursing and sports coaching. The language is generally simple but also introduces young readers to more technical vocabulary; the paramedic section includes such terms as ‘ambulance, decision, treatment and helicopter’. The explanations are spread across the pages in short sentences, each illustrated with a colourful drawing of the subject in action, against a two-colour background which varies from page to page. The style is attractive, clear and easily accessible for children. The choice of characters for every job has been carefully made to reflect our diverse society, although sadly the disabled employee doesn’t appear.

I found the book interesting and thought it would be of educational value in a library or classroom collection for children in early years and KS1 to dip into and perhaps as a source to provoke discussions about the future. The book ends with pictures of all the characters and the question ‘Which one will you choose?’

One small point worth considering is that the title When I Grow Up, I Want To… is very similar to numerous other books, so no shortcuts are possible when searching for it in a catalogue!
