In Where Has All the Cake Gone? Albert’s dad discovers that the cake he baked is missing from the kitchen, but Albert insists that he did not eat it, despite being covered in crumbs and icing. He says that it was all the fault of the penguins. They took him on a wild adventure to France, with a few detours, including a snowball fight with kangaroos on a skiing holiday. When they got back, the penguins were so hungry that, despite Alberts’s best efforts to stop them, they ate all the cake. Albert didn’t even eat one piece, and he did tell them off – really.

Expressive illustrations complement the riotous adventure in an entertaining picture book celebrating the power of imagination (though perhaps it is a good idea to own up if you did eat all the cake!). The loving relationship between Albert and his dad comes across strongly, who is probably used to dealing with his son’s tall tales. This is ideal to share with children in Reception and KS1, for a fun class readaloud or library storytime.
