Another chapter in Jim Smiths award winning (Roald Dahl Funny Prize) series of colourful graphic novels about Barry Loser his ‘keel’ character (cool).

Full of fun and mayhem, this somewhat surreal book celebrates Barry’s tenth anniversary and will not disappoint its many fans. All Barry’s pals are here, Nigel Zucckerberg aka Bunky and Nancy Verkenweken. The ‘keel’ gang are going to prove that Barry is not a ‘loser’ as his name indicates but a winner! There are five new adventures in this latest book and we see a new character in the arrival of a dog called ‘French Fries’ For those familiar with this series, the characters continue to get up to mischief. I particularly enjoyed the incident with the walkie talkies in the supermarket.

Every page is full of illustrations in comic book style. Text is limited which will appeal to readers who favour the graphic novel genre. The pages do at times feel a bit too busy but I guess for many that is the draw of them as they are hugely popular. I think it is more for the solitary reader rather than a shared read aloud experience. However, I imagine everyone who reads and loves this book will enjoy sharing the jokes and mishaps with each other. This will certainly appeal to fans of The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. There will be a lot of 7+ readers rolling about with laughter reading these crazy books. Total escapism.
