Call the Puffins!: Call the Puffins is a new series of books by Cath Howe written for younger readers. We follow Muffin, and her friend Tiny, on the Island of Egg, where a group of young, plucky puffin cadets are in training with the hopes of becoming part of a search and rescue team. Despite both Muffin and Tiny having concerns about their ability as cadets, together they make a formidable duo and the end of the book suggests lots more exciting things to come from the future books in the series.

This is a story about growing up, being brave and working with others – a feel-good tale that teaches young readers that they can achieve their dreams if they try. The illustrations are lovely in this book and set the scene well. They add context and visual cues for the reader to support comprehension and visualisation whist being rather joyful. Perfect for bird and nature lovers, this is a gorgeous concept for a young fiction series. At the back of the book, readers are gifted with a wonderful fact-file all about puffins so readers can learn more about these distinctive sea birds.

Call the Puffins! is a great introduction to chapter books for readers in KS1 upwards and can be used as a class story to read for pleasure; a beginner chapter book for younger readers or a first step for those who are ready for to move on more independent reading.
