Live Like A Roman is an informative non-fiction book filled with a plethora of facts presented in an accessible way. It begins with some basic background information about who the Romans were, where they came from and how we know. There is a useful timeline and a map that demonstrates the extent of the Roman Empire. The book goes on to cover a wide range of topics to depict life in Roman times including everyday jobs, society, fashion, entertainment and many more interesting areas to illustrate what it was really like to live like a Roman. There are clear signposts of how the Romans have impacted upon our lives today and the legacy that they have left behind.

The book is presented clearly with small sections interspersed with pictures to support the information given. A fictional young character tells his story bringing some of the facts to life and there are some additional little pieces included such as the Roman alphabet only having twenty-three letters with J, U and W being included later or the way that the Romans were able to tell the time and even how they cleaned themselves.

The book is interactive with practical crafts included like making a Roman game of the period or a theatre mask or cooking authentic Roman recipes. The book could easily be used as a stimulus for a class cross curricular theme on the Romans and is suitable for KS2 learners.

The back of the book encourages further discussion and contemplation as it asks, ‘Could you have lived like a Roman?’ and there are relevant discussion points to stimulate further thought. There is also a glossary of terms which is useful and this again is interspersed with relevant pictures which makes it accessible.

An epic and pivotal period in our history is brought to life in Live Like A Roman and I would recommend it for any KS2 class studying this period in history. The author Claire Saunders acknowledges the expert help and knowledge given by Professor Matthew Nicholls.
