My Friend Tree is a story about friendship centred around an old oak tree, whose tiny seeds, with a little help from two children, grow into something extremely special.

Tree is no ordinary oak tree. It’s a safe haven, somewhere to play, it’s a home for wildlife; somewhere to find refuge when sad and a place where two children grow in friendship. They dream about creating a forest together, so plant nuts and seeds, and through each change of season nurture their saplings as they grow. As months turn into years, it’s not only the seeds that grow but the connection between them. By the end of the story, they have their own family and delight in the beautiful sanctuary they have created.

The whimsical illustrations echo the childlike dreams and wonder experienced by the characters. The use of rhythm and repetition make this a perfect story for reading aloud but further discussions can be inspired by looking at the illustrations which add a deeper layer to the text. There are instructions at the back of the book on how to plant an acorn, making this a perfect story to share as part of a topic about nature, growth, family or friendship, from early years through to Year 1.
