Watching the Swallows

A delightful compendium of bird poetry.

This anthology is a vast selection of verse from many classical poets, such as Tennyson and Elizabeth Maddox Roberts, and peppered with more modern poets such as Grace Nichols. There is a good balance of genders, which is not often the case with many anthologies that include classic poetry. Poets are included from around the world and from different cultures which adds to the diversity in this text.

This books is produced in collaboration with the RSPB and this ensures that a wide range of birds, their attributes and habitats are covered. Each section is organised by where birds can be seen, for example, ‘In and Beyond the Fields’ or ‘Outside Your Window’.

Watching the Swallows would be ideal for children who are bird lovers. It would also be a useful stimulus for science lessons and discussions around different species. The text is rich in imagery and different poetic forms and could easily be used to stimulate creative writing. Most suited for KS2, 3 and beyond.
