This session is designed to support schools who subscribe to Take One Book and would benefit from a refresher course. The course begins by introducing the ‘text potential‘ planning tool (Guiding Readers – Layers of Meaning, UCL IOE, 2016) and applying this to a text. We explain the different stages in teaching reading for deeper meaning, from the initial hook through to final reflections. We also consider the opportunities afforded for writing and wider learning. We then focus in more detail on planning lessons as meaningful units of learning and demonstrate some of the pedagogic strategies through workshop activities.
