What can we learn from the lives of other people? In recent years there has been a boom in the publishing of biographies for children and young people. The picturebook biography is a particularly innovative sub genre.
In years gone by, biographies written for children often valorised their subjects. There were more biographies written about kings, explorers, scientists, mainly white and mainly male. The gaps have been addressed to some extent, but is everything rosy in the biographical garden?
Participants are invited to bring along a favourite biography written for children. There will be lots of recently published resources to look at and some suggestions for showcasing biographies in the classroom as well as incorporating them in teaching.
