A Sliver of Moon and A Shard of Truth
This book forms part of a series though it can certainly be read on its own.
Prince Veera and his best friend Suku are invited to spend some time in Peetalpur within the court of King Apoorva. The King has not always been Suku’s biggest supporter but this series of trickster tales may just change his mind. Veera and Suku have a fantastic nature and relationship, both full of charm and wisdom. They use their wit and charm to solve problems within the court and to challenge conventional solutions offered by others within the kingdom.
Veera and Suku have much to teach the court- from thoughtfulness, patience and kindness to humour and the wisdom of tradition. These tales are delightful, full of warmth and style, not to mention great insight into culture, tradition and food. The illustrations throughout the book are wonderful and add a sense of wonder to the tales.
Any class would benefit from having this book plus the others in the series in their classrooms but I believe these would make perfect read alouds throughout a term, taking one short story at a time, getting to know Veera and Suku and then learning about the culture of India.
