Alfie Takes Action is a funny story about a daydreaming meerkat who lives in the sand dunes and isn’t terribly good at babysitting his baby brothers and sisters, or digging, or any other meerkat jobs for that matter.
One day a ‘herd of monsters’ (film crew lorries) arrives with some ‘creatures on two legs’ (humans). Fortunately, Alfie’s friends, Bongo (a wild dog) and Snapper (a scorpion) can explain what is going on. The film crew take a particular interest in the daydreaming meerkat – might Alfie find something he is good at after all?
How lovely to have a new publisher producing book banded books; I am always on the lookout for different types of stories to top up our book boxes, and this certainly fits the bill! It is a bright, colourful and funny story that will appeal to so many children, particularly as meerkats have become the in-thing since the ‘Compare the Meerkat’ adverts. This is a white book band story, it is divided into chapters and is a great introduction to a wider range of “real books” (i.e. books not from published schemes).
There are some tips for parents inside the front and back covers, including some questions they could ask, which I know would help some of our parents who are not always in the habit of discussing the books their children are reading. In addition to being an independent reader, I think Alfie Takes Action would be a fun story to read to an infant class (5 – 7 years).
