An introduction to internet safety for 5 – 7 ear olds via a well-known fairytale.
Children seem to be owning smartphones at younger and younger ages, and schools now have mobile phone policies for their pupils as well as their staff. And like pupils (and staff), Goldilocks loves her smartphone too.
A tale in bouncing verse, which is sure to hook in young readers, Goldilocks loves to share photos and videos, all in the quest for gaining precious ”likes”. When her pictures don’t quite get the reaction she expects, she starts sharing candid shots of her family. When her followers tire of these, she pays a visit to a certain house #Icanseewherethisisgoing.
Jeanne Willis has written a book that’s relatable, and she understands the attraction children have of sharing online. This is especially true of the humorous first half of the story, which is helped by illustrator Tony Ross. The second half of the story fulfils its cautionary promise.
This book would work particularly well in an infant guided reading session. There are great opportunities for discussions around smartphones, being online, reputations, privacy and popularity.
Some books like these can be too preachy, some are too patronising, but this one is #justright.
