If ever there was a story for Lockdown, this is it. Pete enjoys playing with his friends and exploring his world. However, when winter comes, Pete must stay inside.

There was a feeling of familiarity reading this story. Amidst the current situation – Covid19 and Lockdown – the story is framed with several questions that you can reflect on before you even start reading. They invite you to think about how Pete feels at different stages of the story.

The illustrations remind me of Britta Teckenstrupp – vivid, layered and very naturalistic. I love the colours that paint each page – candy colours that echo the warmth and growth of Pete’s experience during hibernation.

This is a beautiful read-aloud or read-along story. The rhymes are melodic and expressive. Clever vocabulary choices dance off the page as you read them aloud as do the candied coloured illustrations.

A lovely story to share with younger children.
