Ava enjoys a charmed life as a Princess in a magical kingdom called Biscotti but finds that, apart from the endless supply of cupcakes, she spends most of her time being bored or trying to live up to the expectations placed on her as a future Queen. Until one day she finds a magical portal which takes her to a very different kingdom – that of Camden in London. Here the expectations are very different and as well as finding friends on the BMX trail; she finally discovers what it means to be just Ava. But soon both kingdoms are threatened. Can Ava and her new friends save Biscotti and Camden and on the journey, can Ava discover just what it takes to be Princess BMX?
This is a fun and adventurous story about a Princess with attitude, who is certainly not looking for a Prince Charming. I warmed to the characters in the book and the illustrations by Flavia Sorrentino help develop that connection with Ava. The story moves between the settings of the magical kingdom and Camden but to help signal this for younger readers at the beginning of each chapter heading there is an illustration of either a castle, bike, London skyline or Jeb, the dog.
The short chapters and fast-moving action make it an ideal class reader, especially if exploring other Princesses to compare and contrast with, or if your class has an interest in BMX. It would also be a great addition to a class bookshelf as it would appeal to all and the sparkly cover is very inviting! I enjoyed this book a lot.
