Rocky is the little sister of Roy of the Rovers, growing up in the shadow of her successful footballing brother. In Tom Palmer’s latest book, Rocky is centre stage as she tries to work out what she wants to do in the future as well as take control of her angry outbursts and panic attacks.
On the pitch, we see her determination and skills as a player. The pacy descriptions of the matches are clearly written by someone with a passion for football. My 11-year-old daughter read this in a flash and is eager for further stories about Rocky.
Rocky of the Rovers would be a great addition to the school library especially but not only for those children who need an extra boost to see themselves as independent readers. Place one of Tom Palmer’s books in their hands and there’s a good chance they’ll be off on their reading for pleasure journey.
