‘Scientists are’ everywhere including out there in space. This is the key message from this book, along with you too can be a scientist if you question, wonder, watch and dream. This is a book that takes scientists beyond the stereotype of only wearing white lab coats with test tubes in the pockets and wearing goggles. Beginning with the title question, the reader is submerged into finding out about scientists. Through comic strip style double page spreads, we journey from palaeontologists to meteorologists, to acoustic biologists, and many more before ending with astrophysicists.
The comic strip style will no doubt be appealing to many readers. It helps to chunk the range of information being shared across each double page. The language is driven by a vast range of verbs. This helps to share the fascinating world, and work, of scientists. As a result, each page feels exciting as you read it. Our journey through the world of scientists is carefully created through a question being asked at the end of each double page. This question is answered on the following until the original question about time travel is addressed.
We are introduced to over 20 inspiring, real-life scientists. Scientists from different countries, cultures, and heritages, all engaging in amazing science to improve our world and beyond. We even get to meet them at the end where we are asked ‘Which scientist inspires you?’ Not such an easy question to answer. By the end of the book, you have learned about more scientists and their work than you may have known before you started.
Alongside being inspired by the scientists, the book offers lots of interesting bite-sized facts. Did you know meteorologists weigh clouds? And do you know how heavy a cloud is? This is a book that has something to offer almost everyone. Readers are likely to find at least one double page where they find themselves asking more questions as their interest has been piqued. However, most will likely experience this curiosity across many if not all the pages.
This is a great introduction for any KS1 and Lower KS2 classroom into the world of scientists that stretches far beyond the laboratory as well as including it.
