The Way to Treasure Island is about careful, efficient Matilda who finds her dad’s distracted ways very annoying. But could she be missing out?

I loved this book! A beautiful, vibrant picture book, it tells the story of little Matilda and her dad, as they try to follow a treasure map. Matilda likes to follow the rules and wants to take the shortest route, but Dad likes to meander and explore. These two engaging characters decide to split up to find the treasure, but find that they need each other to enjoy the adventure fully.

The Way to Treasure Island is a beautiful book by Lizzy Stewart, with so much to explore on every page. It would fit well within a nature, island or ocean topic, as the wonderful wildlife is so vividly depicted.

Its large format makes it ideal for sharing with a class, or for children to read in a pair. With so much to spot and talk about, the children will be as distracted as Dad as they move through the story, taking in whales, toucans, eels, parrots and lemurs on the way. There is lots of humour and excitement, and the relationship between Matilda and her dad is both charming and realistic. The core message that family members can be very different, but still love and appreciate each other, shines out of this lovely book.
