This pocket-size, hardback book is full of scaly facts and illustrations on the diverse range of reptiles that slither, swim and roam our planet.
Pattullo’s beautiful print designs and limited colour palette create a nostalgic feel, reminiscent of 1930’s picture books. The combination of photographs, illustrations and facts keep it up to date, and each page is packed full of bite-size chunks of information.
The author is an expert in the field of natural history and has picked out the most interesting and intriguing facts to share about some well-known reptiles, as well as a few that are less familiar, such as the tuatara. On each double-page spread there is an introduction to the animal alongside a Did You Know? and A Closer Look that gives facts and figures about each reptile.
It’s a perfect book for a journey or to share with a child over a cup of tea and a piece of cake. As a teacher, I would use it alongside discussions on endangered species and our impact on the environment. It contains ideal examples of ‘what a good one looks like’ as a model for teaching children how to write their fact files.
The complexity of the language may steer it more towards upper juniors. Still, the new vocabulary is interesting, and a child of any age would gain from picking up this tactile and intriguing little book!
